After working with thousands of students, we know that...

  • Agility creates a special bond between you and your dog
  • The sport is more enjoyable when you're having success
  • Not everyone is having success and this has an emotional cost for the trainer

When you're not having success, you need to make a change.

But change comes with a cost. Years ago, psychologists Don Kelley and Daryl Conner developed a model of how people experience emotions when they make changes in their problem-solving approach. Not all of these emotions are pleasant.

Agility trainers start out excited and optimistic about their dog, but when they run into problems they often feel annoyed, frustrated, and alone. This can quickly lead to feeling unmotivated and unhappy...they have arrived in the Valley of Despair.

Our first agility dog was a rottweiler named Sammie, and we discovered agility when we saw it on Animal Planet almost 20 years ago. My first thought was "I can do that!" and I signed up for a 6-week course thinking I'd be running full courses by graduation (I had a lot of Uninformed Optimism). Once I started, I quickly learned that teaching obstacles and learning how to handle wasn't easy, and I started to doubt myself (I had transitioned to Informed Pessimism).

Over time, I learned enough to start competing at trials, but my dog wouldn't stay at the start line and she never stopped at the end of her contacts. We went months without a qualifying run. My dog had so much speed and potential, but we weren't having success. I descended into the Valley of Despair.

Eventually, I learned about positive reinforcement training, variable reinforcement schedules, and the importance of consistent criteria for stopped contact performance. We started to improve (I had graduated to Informed Optimism). My rottweiler went on to compete at the highest levels, earning MACH, making the finals at the AKC Invitational, and running clean in the Challengers round at the AKC National Agility Championship.

I remember how close I was to giving up, and how frustrated and alone I felt when I couldn't fix our problems. As the creator of Bad Dog Agility, I'm grateful for the opportunity to help others on their own agility journey.

"The VIP program is as flexible or as structured as you want it to be. The coaches are willing to work with you where you are and regardless of your basic approach (one mind, awesome paws, Greg Derrett,....). The coaches represent some of the best agility exhibitors and instructors in North America."

Gwendolyn

from a beginner

"I was a newbie to agility. I felt I did not develop any bad habits because of the immediacy of the online coaching. Mistakes were spotted and corrected before I patterned the dog. I also do live agility classes and judging from handlers in class that have been doing agility for years I am running right with them given only a year of being with VIP."

Holly

USA

before and after

"Before joining VIP I sometimes felt my fast, excited Sheltie needed a different handler. With VIP I was able to find this handler within myself. The handler my Ziva always knew was there for her."

my handling has improved

"I cant believe how my handling has improved since joining the VIP program! From front crosses to backside blinds, the videos are easy to follow and I go home to do them they actually sink in!

I don't have any other formal training than BDA and I don't know how many people have complimented me on how my skills have improved in just the one year I've been in the VIP program."

Lois

you will love the VIP program

"Since I train by myself, I didn't have anyone to help me with my runs. I have been having BDA review my weekend trial runs and provide feedback and it has helped a lot. Each critique gives a thorough explanation of "positives and negatives." I always look forward to these emails and feel good after reviewing them.

You will love the VIP program. The people are excited about agility and helping others achieve their goals. You can access the material whenever it fits into your schedule, so there is never a time commitment that is unattainable."

Cindy

one year later

"After doing agility for almost 20 years, I had lost my way. I wasn't sure how to train certain things anymore because so much has changed. I wasn't sure anymore how to handle. In Excellent JWW it had been 1 1/2 years without a Q. My dog was stalling out in sequences because he was unsure what I wanted him to do. I was nervous every run because I knew I could not do it anymore. One year later, we are qualifying regularly. My dog and I both have the confidence to run every class in AKC. Sarah and Esteban are patient and articulate and they NEVER make you feel dumb. They have given me back the life I loved so much before!"
