I understand the clicker is very concise, but will you eventually go from the clicker to a marker word? Do you use both randomly at this stage, or is that confusing?

    • Sarah Baker says:

I teach my puppies multiple marker cues (click or yes means you did it right and the reward is coming to you), get it (you did it right, stop and come get your reward), etc. It does not seem to confuse them at all. I do usually end up using yes more often than the click because I always have it available.

A few questions on this weeks topics…
Can you explain what you mean by classical conditioning?
What are you using for a box? How tall should it be? Is it wooden?

    • Sarah Baker says:

Hi Jennifer! Classical conditioning is the pairing of two stimulus. So click, then treat, is classically conditioning that a click means a treat is coming. Low pressure, then thunder, low pressure starts to take on the fear associated with thunder. The leash means a walk, leash becomes exciting. If you want to pair two things, present the new thing (like a click) THEN present the second thing, in this case a treat.

I use different things for boxes. Cardboard, wood, bowls, tuperware, whatever I have that works! It should be short enough that your puppy can easily interact with it yet tall enough to be a bit of a challenge.
