Hi Sarah. I’m in week 3 with my puppy. It has not helped that I lost power for 6 days and spent most of my time looking for ice. Anyway, somehow my puppy is training me! He is in a behavior chain where he jumps on me and bites my shorts and hangs there and then I have to get him down and then he immediately sits!! So then he wants a treat for that! Any time I am in the kitchen he will do this. I have tethered him to prevent this behavior but it is not solving it. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Great job recognizing you have a behavior chain and great job using some management so he does not get to practice it. Definitely do not give him a treat for that sit : ) The management is a crucial part but you might also need to train an incompatible behavior like holding a toy in the kitchen, lying down near you in the kitchen, sitting as soon as he is near you, staying on a station, etc.

I like the sitting or maybe laying down when he is near me. I’ve been doing the “stay on mat” and he’s already figured out the laying down part on the mat so maybe I can do something like that. The jumping and biting escalated last night while I was sitting in a chair. He was like a toddler throwing a tantrum! I put him in the pen and he calmed down. Thanks for your suggestions!!
