Still getting some hopping. Should I change the length between the cavs?
https://youtu.be/LunsFmen4FA
Yes, I would try less space. Sometimes you have to play around with things for sure! Sorry for the delay in answering, on my way back from competing on a team in Europe with Skeptic!
Yes, I watched your fantastic runs on Facebook! Sarah had given me a heads-up that you would be delayed. Glad you are back!
Thank you so much!
Hello Sarah,
Our first attempt at the sideways weave Cavalettis. Our forward focus wasn’t great…

To help with forward focus, try starting ahead and placing treats between the rungs, then one at the end. Put fewer and fewer down as your pup starts to anticipate the rewards coming ahead and not being tossed from your hand. You can also try some sort of target pre placed at the end.
Around 8:14 it looks like Skeptic is walking sideways (side stepping). Is that what you are trying to show? Is that something will learn/need to learn?
Thank you for the time stamp! Yes, 7:53-8:54 I am trying to get him to take side steps. It is definitely a great body awareness and core conditioning exercise. I teach this both by having my puppy target something that is at their side and by using some pressure and/or luring to get them to side step away from me and toward me.
How wide is the plank where the Merle turns around and sits sideways?
12″ wide
I have a 14 week old Weim/a large breed. I have read that wobble boards should not be introduced until much later, so it worries me about using those and the paw pods. The use of boxes to climb on, getting into and out of boxes, trying to fit into smaller items, etc all seem much safer. I will certainly relook at this when growth plates are not an issue, however!
I agree with you. Skeptic was a solid, strong and confidant puppy from the beginning so he did those a little early. The larger the dog, the longer you want to wait. Doing the skills on stable surfaces, like you are doing is the way to start! Great job!
The underwater treadmill seems like something that would need lots of baby steps to work up to being ok with it. I have tried to convince one rehab place that I would like to condition my dog to it without having a real session, but they still want to charge over $100. Any suggestions/ideas on ways to convince them/alternatives to do instead?
Walking your dog around a very large stock tank/pool and teaching your dog to walk on a regular treadmill can be good prep. Otherwise you just have to pay the professionals their fee. Bring really high value treats! My dogs have learned it pretty quickly but they have all had previous skills of swimming and regular treadmill walks.
OK thx!
No problem!
