90% of the time Mako has a solid drop cue… But every once in a while when he’s really worked up, he gets exceptionally good at tugging WHEN I ask for the drop lol. Growls , shakes , weight shifts , and does not want to drop. The things I dream of lol. I have occasionally gotten bitten during the process as a redirect(admittedly I’ve pried it from his mouth … I will no longer do that (:
It sucks because what I want to do is reward him for his awesome tugging !!!! But , I did ask for a drop … Sooooooo …. Any suggestions to help ensure I support his tug drive is most important to me, but I want to be consistent… ( I’m honestly not phased by his redirect on me as bad as that might sound, I know that will improve with time and me understanding him better).
This doesn’t happen often, but I’m hoping to get it on video so you can see it happen.
A video would be good. I agree that you don’t want to ask for a drop and then engage in tug, but HOPEFULLY if he’s that into it, then when you DO get it back, you can IMMEDIATELY offer the rebite and a great game of tug.
Too often, when the dog takes a while to respond, we take equally long to give them back the tug. But it’s actually the opposite. It’s a HARD choice to let go, when he finally does it, the MOMENT he let’s go, “YES, get it”.
What are your comments/ thoughts on “trading” the toy for a treat or cookie, in order to get it back
I will mix it in there with certain dogs, but only if they tug very well and value tugging much more than food. Otherwise, this will tend to cause problems as the dog will anticipate food if they smell it or it looks like you are reaching for it. This is why the re-bites are important. I will scatter food on the grround at the very end of a session, but that’s different because you’re not trading.
