    I realized after watching our video that the reason Molly was turning the wrong way after the rear cross over #3 was because I was using my inside (left) arm when I should have been using my outside (right) arm. Do you agree?

    Hi Jennifer,

    I just watched your commentary on Lyric, and it would have saved me – well, Quitte – a whole lot of repetitions had I watched it before trying to figure out how to get her to bend on #4 (she *can* be bendy).

    I think my timing and position cues, never all that strong except at a distance (hey, there’s a reason Quitte was doing great in USDAA Masters Gamblers long before we got out of Novice Jumpers!). But they have really deteriorated even more maybe in part because with Quitte I’ve been trying to use handling to compensate/shape rather than train the behavior of bending around/not leaving early on backside slices. So, I’m going to do the exercises you recommended for Lyric.

    (She had already done a bunch of reps before I started the camera – so she was really tired and patterned by the time I recorded these clips, except the very last one, which was the next day.)

    The good news is that this month you inspired me to start training a running start!.

        Yes, I learn a lot from BDA commentaries on other dogs. You guys are all extremely insightful, clear and generous with your feedback on everyone’s “works in progress” sequences! It’s very helpful. (Though a little daunting to watch others handle the same sequence so much better than I do.)

        It’s funny, I have been focused on running and keeping moving (per your instructions 😉 so I was trying to run eagerly over to the FC’s, but I (1) wasn’t getting into the right position, and (2) I wasn’t getting there soon enough to show her the deceleration that would signal collection into a tight turn.

        That first run (where she bends better and takes off closer to the foot of the standard) is when I don’t just decel, I come to a complete stop. She is always going to choose a slice and cut back unless I give her a strong cue, especially in extension or in this type of obstacle combination, which is about the only time she isn’t a faster slicing/cutting back and making up the time with ground speed.

        I think the only other time I gave her a reasonable deceleration cue was after the rear cross out of the tunnel at about 1:18 in my video. While I went in so deep after the cross that I pushed her out too far, you can see that she understands that she is supposed to collect, and her lift off point is closer to the foot of the standard. I think the turn would have been fast and tight except that I didn’t get my outside arm up soon enough, so while she was collecting for a turn, she wasn’t sure where we were going after the turn – which is why she ticks the bar. She really tried hard for a late tight turn, though – you can see her twisting to swing her back legs to the side over the bar.

        Re. Verbal bypass cue. I do use one, usually, “Here” or “with me” if it’s going to be a long drag. I’m not sure why I didn’t use one for this sequence. I probably had the tunnel positioned so that she could see the correct end from her start line. (I REALLY need more sand bags. The tunnel moves each and every rep.)

        I didn’t tape all our multiple circle work, and bend recalls, which she will do fine when not in extension, but once I’m running to get into position at the middle of the bar she’s extending rather than collecting to make the turn. Even when my position and timing didn’t totally suck, she still wants to do the jackknife, so I gave upon that because we were both getting so frustrated. We tried the sequence one more time and I tried throwing in a wrap verbal which sort of worked but neither of us was moving very fast. This will be a work in progress. I know we can both do it. Someday.

            Hi Jennifer, I am super glad you noticed the three verbals and that you agree the second (“kee-kee-kee”) got the best result. I wanted to put them all together and see what she responded to best because it seemed like if she was in extension driving to #4 she was going to try hard to slice it (flattening out any arc from #3-4) even if I had my outside arm up signaling a FC. But I couldn’t figure out how to get her to collect to #4 without her:

            1) pulling off #4 and coming in to me if I was early with the cue (this only seems to happen on 180-type sequences) or

            2) encouraging the slice if I was still running to position for the FC in the middle of #4 after she had mentally committed to #4 (which I always was).

            “kee-kee-kee,” is what I trained (and she understands) for turns off her running dog walk. It means *keep running*, but collect at the bottom of the dog walk because there will be a turn. So, it is a me-in-motion verbal decel cue, and it seems like maybe it will work for other obstacles.

            I tried using the fake-out “around” verbal, which kind of worked, but fake-outs don’t last long and I don’t want to mix up that fairly new verbal with her understanding of FCs.

            I tried using her “out” verbal because it has evolved to mean either,

            1) literally, go out on the flat (which is what I wanted for her to do here so she wouldn’t slice), or

            2) it means “backside” if I’m in that position, or

            3) it means take the far obstacle if there are two obstacles in her path (like in a gamble). So it’s very position and/or body-cue dependent.

            I’ve been trying to choose three separate verbals that mean these three things, but it’s a hard habit for us to break, I think because I have used it as a crutch to shape her path so often.

            I am really glad you got on me about verbals. It’s both our strength, and weakness. Weakness, because I’ve been sloppy about one word meaning one thing, and also training “pure” verbals (without body/position cues). But it sure is harder than it seems to choose, fade, use, maintain good pure verbals!

            Yes, it appears your verbals could be cleaned up a bit 😉 It is never good when someone says “this verbals to do option a or b or c!” It can’t mean that many different things and still work. And frankly, I think she follows your other cues and less verbals than you probably think any way 😉

    Robbie is injured, so I thought I would try this with the baby!
    I’m a bit concerned that she hasn’t done much sequencing and every in-person training seminar I go to, we are put in foundations and I can’t seem to move on! So I have decided to do some of the small space drills here to try and push her a bit – good idea or bad? To do starters courses here, she doesn’t need threadles, backsides, etc, just basic forward jumping and one or two crosses.She’s 18 months now.
    Anyway, we had a few problems – I’ll let the video do the talking.

        Second, that’s funny that you used Hi-5 for the first time! I should’ve looked closer!
        Thanks for the tips. I may have departed from multi-wraps for a while as she seemed to go flat doing them, though I was thinking now she is more excited about it all, it is probably time to re-visit them!

          Trying working your multi wraps into small sequences as opposed to just doing them at one jump or as a drill. You might get a different response when she is only having to wrap one jump out of 7 or 8 of them. Hi5 can easily get deflated but incorporating then into sequences has helped her realize that jumping is important EVERYWHERE; not just on one jump.
