I did try this one but I REALLY need to work on my dogs committing/being independent on the back sides. It was rough 🤦🏼‍♀️. But we will get it!!!!

    • Sarah Fernandezlopez says:

It’s good to know your holes! It lets you prioritize training and make the best tactical decisions in the meantime. Did you have video you wanted reviewed?

      • goldenspurgldns@aol.com says:

This was really hard for the red dog and myself. I will try it again and re-record it. At 2 and 5 on the backside slice I am having trouble getting Skye to stay committed to the jump while I get in place for the blind. It’s our lack of experience. Plus I’m not sure how to teach it.

        • Jennifer Crank says:

I think toy/treat placement it very important when training commitment. When doing backside slices, place your reinforcement on the landing side of the jump near the wing. As the dog jumps, cue them to the toy/treat. Once the dog realizes that the reinforcement is not tied to you but rather to their performance, they will care a bit less about your motion which allows you to move more and more onto the takeoff side of the jump.

Thanks so much! I will definitely try again using your advice! I really, really appreciate it!

This was a fun course. Tribute got a little stuck behind me in the first exercise so we tried that one twice. I thought it went a little better for us at #5 the second time.

Here is our work with these sequences, definitely like the slices vs curls as usual for the GSPs…I’m debating teaching a separate curl vs slice backside cue (I have separate ones for threadles) and would love your thoughts on that topic! Thanks for the feedback!!

They first five minutes if the module feedback. Then I ramble for about 2+ minutes about the question of two backsides verbals 😉

      • Kayla Swanberg says:

Thank you! I often go too deep on certain types of front crosses so will work on being more mindful of that. I also need to work on not rushing to get ahead all the time, sometimes it gets me in trouble!

Thanks for the discussion on backside cues, I really appreciate it! I’ve been debating if I should spend the time on it when I can typically get there and show additional support with my motion so I’m not sure it’s really worth it at least with this set of dogs. I’ll keep pondering, thanks!

  • Sue Verbocy says:

In this challenge I found that reverse wraps at #5 seemed more fluid for both Zest and Blast. Maybe it was the angle or my setup of the last jump that made the backside serps feel awkward or maybe I didn’t get out in time when the backside is coming from a jump rather than being able to lead out as in the beginning.

    Hi again!

I did the challenge both ways that were demonstrated. I think it is safe to say I would always choose the slice in this situation. In fact, I do wraps (curls) so rarely that I was pleased Enzo did them so cleanly.

I really felt the slice was more comfortable on this one. The wrap felt very managed. I can’t get her to go into speed on the backsides, so I feel like I’m waiting for her. I’m also struggling with timing and where on the wing I need to be so I don’t block her. https://link.getonform.com/view?id=q4lceeRbuRABjIoI15kf

    Thanks for feedback.

Flash – Exercise 2 – Option 2 https://youtu.be/yM_G8YJRhrA This was not easy for us, but we finally got ‘er done!

  • Sharon says:

We had considerable trouble executing challenge sequence 1 and never did get the blind cross after jump 2. Toby and I have not been trained to do a backside slice followed by a Blind Cross. I finally gave up trying to blind after the backside slice on 2. I’ve included a clip of a few of my attempts to train the back side slice followed by a blind, but I don’t know if I am doing it right? What would you advise?

I eventually gave up and tried the sequence without a Blind Cross. I have included a few variations I tried, of what we did to get through that sequence. What are your thoughts on my variations?

We seemed to have no trouble with the back side curls of challenge sequence 2, but I still could not get a Blind Cross in after jump 2. I think that maneuver is just not in our “wheel house” at this time. I’m sure with the right training myself and practice we could probably eventually be able to do this, but right now, it’s not happening.

I’m very interested in your feedback on what we have done. Thank you very much.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Hey Sharon! You are not alone in having trouble with the backside slice blind. It has a lot to do with backside independence and then commitment. The goal is to be on the takeoff side of the jump by the time the dog takes off. You needed to get farther ahead while he was going to the backside of #2 in order to be in position for the blind cross. I tried to explain in my analysis but feel free to follow up with more questions if needed.

Here is a very recent analysis of backside slice handling that also might help: https://baddogagilityacademy.com/backside-slice-handling-options/

      • Sharon says:

Thanks again for your input. I didn’t realize Toby back jumped #2 because I was in his way. That was good to know. I don’t know how to get him to take the jump from the backside if I keep moving. he tends to bypass the jump if I move around it.
The video of Sarah Baker gave me a hint, but it sounds like I would need to use the dead toy approach. I’m not sure that will work for us. Is there another way to train that commitment to take the jump from the backside while I keep moving on? Would dropping his food toy in that spot work? Do you know if there is another training approach I could try?
I plan to watch Sarah Baker’s video a bunch more times, and see if I can get the food toy dropped strategically enough. Do you have other advice?

        Thank you

Melody and Tucker. Boy do we have work to do! Pushes to slices and curls are quite new for us.
