Here’s Tru’s and my work on these exercises. Love serps! And the way I put this exercise set up allowed me to work out something I got wrong this weekend trialing. A premier standard course from John Defilppi had the A frame where my dog walk is in the video and we had to take a (next to) jump, not the contact. At the trial, Tru bought the off-course A-frame and, in your exercise set, the first time through, he went up the dog walk. Had to add a reverse spin in exercise 1 to keep him off the contact. Obviously, wrapping the other wing as in exercise #2 solved the problem as well (at the trial it was actually a back-side that had to be done: I didn’t see then I could have threadle-curled it…oh well). When watching my video of the challenge sequence, I could (almost) hear you telling me to move more but in my defense, I was trying to see how far away I could be and still get the backsides. I have had occasion in Premier to use Tru’s willingness to do verbal backsides to allow me to get significantly ahead of him.

Enjoying these exercises! In the side by side comparison, I noticed you didn’t say anything about changing lead foot or trade-offs for keeping the dog in extension (slice) vs the wrap. Any thoughts on those two topics relative to the dog speed? Thanks!
Hey Carl!
I find that not everyone understands the concept of leads, so I generally use the phrase “it’s easier for the dog to slice than to wrap”, but indeed, this is, in large part, because of the lead change that happens on the wrap. In our 3 part assessment, the first element is “where is the dog coming from” which is basically equivalent to “based on where the dog is coming from, one option requires a lead change (the full loop) and the other does not (the slice). Next we look at the distance to the next obstacle, and finally we look at the angle to the next line of obstacles. So essentially the lead change vs extension trade off is built into 1/3 of the analysis.

Kian and I had fun. So many options with this map. We actually ran this course. Michele had a few courses with serpentines that weekend. Here’s our go at it.

I also included a threadle curl for the challenge. I thought that was a good spot to practice that. Hope that’s ok.

Thanks! I think your initial thought was correct, a little more motion to show direction in option one would be a good thing. Maybe just not as far as you initially thought. I can’t find my run of the full course unfortunately. I probably forgot to ask someone to record.
Hi Sarah….Zest will be attending the Invitational. He is 11.5 years old so is running 20” preferred. Blast is 5 and is prepping for NAC in 2025 so I am doing this prep work with him until the NAC prep course comes out.
Zest, on Black #5 I didn’t have my notes with me so didn’t do it with a serp blind. I didn’t want to redo it with him as we are trialing this weekend so I left the sequence in the way we did it.

I just noticed that on the challenge, I numbered it wrong so the backsides are at different jumps. Sorry about that.

Thank you so, so much, Sarah! Yes, I really have trouble getting my shoulder rotation going soon enough when executing a front cross! But the great thing is that now I can see my late rotation (and sometimes additional steps!) when reviewing videos. Previously, I didn’t understand what was going wrong with my front crosses, so I avoided them. Thanks to you and Jennifer,
I finally “get it”!
Awesome! Understanding is the first step! Now you have to build the internal timing and muscle memory.
Here is our attempt at this. Aeri did better than I expected. Definitely some spots I can clean up handling.

Thank you! That was fast!
Is there a link to Michelle Fletcher’s course map. Above is Judy K’s map from the previous lesson.
Sorry about that! It is VERY LOOSELY based on the map linked to above. I also used this layout to test several “exits” of the serpentine since there were serps in many maps. Even on this course, it could be 7-11 or 10-14!
Thanks Sarah
Here’s Jake’s attempt. I left in the oops on the challenge where Jake’s handler messed up. 🤪 Thankfully he forgave me.

Here’s Indy’s attempt. He has big plans to go to the Invitational someday! We struggled a bit on the 1st exercise so I broke it down some & remembered to reward him when he got it. 🙂

TY Sarah!
I made some minor tweaks due to size of yard and used weaves as white #5, so hope that’s ok. And good boy Sky for not being distracted by the squirrels in the brush, but it’s probably why I said his name when it wasn’t necessary 🤦♀️
My order is a bit different and I didn’t do a FC, and did a lead out.
First one, I could’ve done a BC but did a RC to black #5.
Second option, all serp with a clearer verbal to white #5. It was Jenn’s recent feedback that reminded me I was confusing my verbals, so that’s why I didn’t say dig-dig and only said Right.
And then, I did my own option with a lead out, and threw in a threadle for fun.
We look both a bit low energy, but we just returned from a hike, and wanted to do this before the rain returned.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
