We haven’t done much of the short sequences lately due to constant rain since the beginning of November (finally a break this week, yet ground is frozen – for Oregon Coast!), but we have been at trials – got another QQQ last weekend! That’s 4 in the last 5 trials! I’ve been sharing our videos through the VIP email so Sarah sees those.
On this one, I handled it a bit differently because of space. My tunnel isn’t that long, and with my spine, I didn’t want to move it to the other side. Same reason why I made #8 the weaves. Hope that’s ok?
#1 – ugh, I see I did a RC on the landing side, but he loves weaves, so it worked.
#2 – successful threadle, and later, did a BC. I liked how that felt.
#3 – changed the start so we were more in motion, did RCs then threadle (but he wasn’t clear about it) and then a BC.
#4 – I was trying very hard to not say his name nor pat my leg! BC start but then I wasn’t supporting him well enough – maybe it was too far of a distance or I was too far to the right, pushed on his line too much and confused him. When I tried it again, I layered #7 and it worked well.
Thank you in advance for your feedback! Your feedback has helped me a lot, and it shows with our recent successes at trials!

Nice work! And no problem about the adjustments. You were able to keep the challenges intact.

Thanks so much Jenn! I greatly appreciate the kudos and the feedback, but I have a question about the tunnel threadle. Since we don’t do Premier, the only time I do that threadle cue with Look, Look and the off arm is for the tunnel (especially on the U shaped ones, although I may add a Left or Right if I’m too far behind him). With that in mind, are you suggesting I still come up with something different or is it okay to stick with I’m using?
Again, Thank You!
You absolutely can keep with “look, look”. Just drop saying “tunnel” after it. “Look” should be a tunnel cue – adding the “tunnel” cue after it implies that “look” just means to come in to you and the “tunnel” command is the release. No need to reinvent the wheel; what you are doing is good and just needs tweeked.
Ah, I get it! Thanks so much for clarifying!
Ironically, there have been times I haven’t said tunnel after the Look, Look and off arm cue and he’s taken the tunnel, but then I think I’ve confused him by not saying tunnel. But it’s the opposite – he gets it even if I didn’t. Thanks again for your excellent coaching!
Oh, forgot to mention…handled the tunnel bypass option by layering the jump. Tru read that perfectly on the first try.
Set was more challenging than I thought it would be! Needed an outside arm to get Tru into the tunnel at the end of the challenge sequence.
Challenging…for you? No way!! 😉

Here is our attempt at this. I think I need to train a tunnel discrimination cue. What I’m doing is a lot slower for sure and makes her handler focused which I don’t want.

Good work! But yes, I support the decision to train a tunnel discrimination cue 😉

This video submission includes only Exercises 1-4; no Challenge Sequence was done. Pardon the poor framing which cropped out the start line a bit. The video is from a second day of training on this sequence; the first day was 12 days earlier. Both sessions were very short. (We’ve been doing foundation work with tunnel threadles in the backyard.)
After viewing the video during uploading, I wondered if my lead outs in exercises 1 and 2 were too far from jump #1?
Also, in Exercise 1, although the camera angle may not show it, Jem did peek at the wrong tunnel entry but she did successfully read the threadle cue.
The tunnel bypass was the biggest challenge, but despite a wide turn on the successful attempt, Jem did avoid the tunnel, and I did not use verbal cues. FYI, I wanted to sort of pressure myself, so I allowed only two attempts per exercise and concentrated on walking the sequence carefully. The first three exercises were run only once each. We needed two tries on the bypass exercise. https://youtu.be/7rSRvfRj9To
Your tunnel discrimination training is clearly working! Nice job!

Hi Jenn,
I had a bit of a crazy week teaching at my place and another facility so I didn’t have a lot of time to get these done and when I did, my mind was kind of all over the place. With Zest I forgot to do Exercise 4 and with both of them my body kept running the sequence with what felt comfortable so I kept doing a blind inside the serp area. Anyway, my apologies for not doing all of the ways you demonstrated.

I don’t do threadles well, in fact I hate them and I’ll try to find ways around them 😂. I also included my ways around the threadle.
Also on the bipass tunnel…no lie, I worked on a bipass cue for many months with these boys and I will say it was kind of a failure. I have to be doing something wrong because none of my dogs have ever really understood it. So I still have to cue to go into the tunnel after I get them to bipass the wrong end.
I really need to revisit these and try to train them better.

I think your tunnel discrimination is better than you’ve giving the boys, and yourself, credit for 🙂

Thank you for the great feedback. I will definitely keep working the bipass cue and drop the tunnel word. I think it must be a timing thing in competition as it doesn’t work as well there as it does in practice.
Wow, I can definitely see how much later I was with Blast’s FC than with Zest.
Here Jake’s attempt. I have a couple of more reps in where I forgot what the handling was supposed to be & did it the way I would do it at an actual trial. Our threadles aren’t that great but he got it done.

The “in in in”. Yeah, Sadly I taught him “in” as tunnel bipass cue a couple years back. then I realized OMG how many times on a course do I say “in in” as a shorten to his name. I never went back and retaught it to something else. Close I guess would be my word to try but as you said if it’s not broke don’t fix it?! The “here” is supposed to mean come to me.
I tried to be conscious of my overuse of verbals. I think I was better. If I still say too much please let me know.
This went well for us. Except I struggled with the challenge but we finally got it. I realized we don’t really have the skill to get to the correct end of the final tunnel.

MUCH better on the verbals!!

I was trying to be conscious of the verbals. Good points on using too many verbals as motivation. I think it has become a habit to overuse them so it’s now taking away some enthusiasm when I try not to. I’ll work on bringing that back with fewer verbals, but with some motivating ones.
I realized going into this sequence we don’t have a verbal tunnel discrimination and I thought we were fine until the challenge. That’ll be on the list for the first of the year. I believe I can manage until then, but it may cost us some time. Thanks again!
