Ryker and Parks, both going to NAC, so both working the sequences. Thanks in advance for the feedback!

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Lots of great stuff!! On almost all the options, your timing for Ryker was better than your timing with Parks, which I found interesting. Maybe the higher bars give you more time for your crosses?

      • DebAbbott says:

Thank you for the great feedback. Yes, I do feel more comfortable running Ryker and I think it is the higher bars and his earlier commitment. Parks doesn’t always commit as I expect and I feel like she’s faster groundspeed-wise and twitchier. Ryker’s times are a bit faster (~1+ second), but that’s because he eats up yardage with his stride. I have been trying to focus more on my handling on rears, so this was helpful.

    Carla & Riley
Riley was sluggish this day. Turns out she had a stomach virus & was sick for the rest of the day.
We’ve had a slow start. But we’re ready to get focused now.

So finally the snow is gone, the ice has melted and we’ve had three days of no rain!! Yay, we get to train!

Here is our first Lesson I. The NAC Preo course!!

    Look forward to the feedback!!

This video has Indy and I’s attempt at the small spaces plus the challenge. Watching your options back, we definitely broke up the rear options into different runs (oops!). This will be our first NAC ever, so I’m excited to use this course to help prepare! 😁

    • Ashley Acton says:

I also wanted to mention that I couldn’t really get her to drive forward from 1 to 2 on the rear options, so that’s why I did a RC on the flat between those jumps. You can tell we don’t do many rears 😆

      • Jennifer Crank says:

There were a lot of different options with the rear crosses I demoed. You didn’t need to do them all or mix and match them in the perfect order. It was more to show you all the choices knowing that different dogs would need different things. I’m glad you found what made sense for you and Indy.

Thank you! She keeps me very honest when I’m late 😉 I definitely catch myself crossing late and almost being too nervous to cross before she’s landed because I subconsciously think it’ll help me not get a bar with her ETO. After listening to the podcast about it, I’ve become more confident in running her, and I realize that it serves no purpose to try to way over-shape lines to not to get bars. Thanks again!!

Hi Jen, we’re not going to NAC this year, but I’m decided it would be beneficial to try these exercises with my young whippets and get going again. I’m definitely a little rusty after retiring my heart dog and spending the last few years dock diving and doing Scent Work. We were able to squeeze in Lesson 1 FCs between rainstorms and funny enough, I had opposite problems with the boys. Roux, the youngest, kept flanking jump #3 https://youtu.be/eS6eeFksvMQ and Kimchi kept pulling off #2 and going to #3! https://youtu.be/0uJ4BUIHQak
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Carol N Flash says:

Sorry I’m a little late in getting to the exercises. I have been in a boot for the last 6 weeks due to a tear in my plantar fascia. This is literally the first time I have run my dog since November. (He’s been running with other handlers.). As for the exercises, I liked the front cross much better than the blind for the same reasons you stated, a much stronger turning cue. For the rear cross options, I liked the second one much better. I doubt I would ever pick the serp option for fear of getting behind my dog. Since I can leave Flash in the poles, I would most likely plan on the front cross. The park where I set this up was sloppy due to our recent rains. Thanks for putting this together.

Wanted to setup the weave poles/jump sequence but didn’t have enough space clear of snow so had to settle for the A-frame to start. My leg was bothering a bit so my front crosses don’t look especially graceful…sorry about that. The blind worked better for me than the front at the start in the small space exercises. Reviewing the video I’m not sure I did the rear cross options correctly. Even to me (!), the rear seemed weird at the start. What worked better for me was the front at the start then the rear. Had lots of trouble with option 1 of the challenge. Truman wanted to take the backside of 4 every time. I think it was because I had to stay very close to him to get the curl at 3. The only way I could get him to take the front side of 4 was to give him my “close” verbal which means let me stay close to you and don’t move away from me (and you can see him head check in the video when he hears it). It was easier to get the front side of 4 with the threadle option 2. However, Truman seemed to have a harder time with the curl at 3 when I threadled him. Then, it occurred to me if I did the threadle at 2-3, I could let him slice 3, FC on the landing side of 3 and pick him up on my left, rear cross on the take off side of 4 and then the backside slice at 6. This seemed to eliminate all of the ambiguities for Tru, it was easier jumping for him and easier handling for me. Not sure it was faster, but it was a whole lot more reliable. Thanks for choosing this…good lessons for both of us.

Blast, five years old and Zest, ten years old. This will be Blast’s first NAC. These two are so different. Zest is much faster in practice and a bit slower in competition while Blast is slower in practice and faster in competition.

Congrats on getting two dogs to NAC! I find each dogs first national is a bit more special so very exciting for Blast!

      • Sue Verbocy says:

Thank you Jen. I’m a bit nervous with the young guy but we will definitely have fun for his first time showing in the big venue. Thank you for the great feedback. Wow, I was so early on those blinds I do see your point on how it can get confusing to the dog. On the serp, did I need to move sooner through it or was it just the design of the course? I do tend to do more fronts and blinds rather than rears as I hate waiting. I have noticed with Blast that he is better at finding lines but not always the one I need him to take when I tend to do fronts or blinds on landing sides of a jump. I have started to use more rears when I see off course potentials with him as he has more obstacle focus. What works for Zest, who is much more handler focused doesn’t always work for Blast.

        • Jennifer Crank says:

Without actually having the last jump of the course set up, it is hard to know if you would have made it. You did have some hesitation at jump 3 that put you a bit farther behind for#5. Had you stayed moving and pushed around the wing, you likely would have been able to get the final jump. There wasn’t any other obstacle out there either. But it was certainly a higher risk option (as I discussed in the analysis). Good if you can GUARANTEE to stay ahead, but not so great if there is risk o falling behind.

I would probably be most comfortable doing the FC here. The rear rear felt most awkward for me.

First time posting videos for review…fingers crossed that I get it posted right. My name is Chris and this is my 2.5 year old Cavalier, Buzz. I am hoping to use this course to improve the “smaller things” in my handling such as being mindful of my position, my motion and my eye commitment and how they affect my dog’s path.
