Thank you.
My notes are not separated by judge, so this comment might be in the wrong place. My question is: Do you think that there will be a challenge with an off course tunnel and a 90 degree turn off the DW?
You showed an example, and I am aware that this is a legitimate challenge but I don’t see it used hardly at all (the 90 degree turn off the DW). There was a lot of griping on Facebook about a course with such a turn.
Maybe my question is: How much training time do I want to devote to this? 🙂
It popped up in more than one judge’s courses, so I think you have to be ready for it. If they put it in recent courses, it’s at least possible that they put it in their NAC courses, griping not-withstanding.
For pick out of tunnels, I have been clapping my hands since my voice may not be loud enough in a closed arena. Any other suggestions?
I think the strongest pick up out of the tunnel is to be relatively close to the dog and to get in their line of sight, so I literally get my hand in line of sight of the tunnel exit, watch them connect with me, and then takeoff.
That can only work if the rest of the course allows it.
And I feel like the real skill being tested, is knowing how much support you can give and get to where you need to go.
The course doesn’t allow me to have a strong pick up, then yes I’m going to be using my voice or maybe stopping my motion for a moment for that connection but instead of being right at the tunnel exit I’m closer to the next obstacle
What handling are you recommending on RDW to no tunnel tunnel trap? I have been doing lateral distance with a slight decel (no forward motion) then a bypass cue then RC jump to tunnel.
I think the RC is a great option. It’s the one option that doesn’t have a lot of motion directly at the off course tunnel. But people are scared to do it. Or they have tunnel suck dogs who would take the tunnel even when not cues. You can use your bypass cue. Or use a strong decel to set up the turn to the jump.
I think everyone SHOULD be able to do the RC.
Some handlers can do the front or blind. But to do it, they need to be able to get into a good position. So it depends on how fast the dog is relative to the handler. Not everyone will be able to physically get into FC or BC position.
Here’s an exercise on the same trap from another NAC

Thank you so much for doing these. Even if we don’t get to practice them all it’s good to see and will be a reminder if it comes up.
I’ve seen a lot of the No tunnel and pick up to a straight line from the tunnel at both recent trials I was at. I took the pickup for granted with Surf trying to sprint to get to a handling spot. Knew my mistake rhe minute it happened. 🤦♀️😆
Glad you like it! Yes – I see the tunnel pickups catching people who don’t recognize it as a challenge!
This one is available now!
Hi Kim! So sorry, I started to publish them and then the schedule came out from the AKC and I wanted to revamp them a little knowing who is doing Challengers and Finals. I just sent an email out as well.
Thanks for letting me know!
