Interesting course. It seemed to me for the small space sequence, the serp option you presented first was the best for Truman as it was clear to me that I had to layer the weave poles on the approach to the target sequence. With the challenge sequence I chose to do fronts because Truman was just rotating around me and I didn’t need to move much. I am trying hard to get Tru to carry more of the motion load!

Here are our videos. And thanks so much for all of your feedback especially with how busy you are. Beautiful runs at EO try outs, BTW.
    Set 4:

    Blast

    Challenge:

Zest – I left bloopers in because I really don’t teach this skill well. I have really tried hard to work threadle backsides with them both. I’m sure it’s me as I must not be teaching it correctly from the start. I had to really break the last part down a few times before he got it. At almost 12 years old, I don’t know if he will ever really understand. So I’d have to do everything in my power to use the first option with him.

Blast – Threadle worked well for him. He does have a hard time coming off the start line with speed, especially after wraps. Any ideas to increase his speed off the line are welcome.

Here are my tries on this one. I just ran the challenge the way I would if presented it. Trying to get it done before bad weather moved in.

My exercises, fun techniques and challenging. My option 2 challenge isn’t the best(sl distraction @start) The backside isn’t a strong suit unless I’m in position. Thanks!!!

Here is my attempts at the exercises and the 2 challenges. I really struggled with the second challenge – rear cross 4-5. I could have had the spacing a little wrong. He would go over#6 or I would pull him to left too much which I know I DO NOT want to do (the wonderful L rear cross)!!!! But I’m sure from the feedback you all are giving me you are aware not only do I not like rears but it’s not a strong suit of ours and we are working on performing them more appropriate.

I also don’t technically have a “bypass/don’t take the jump, turn back and take the jump” command so I was happy that he did that on the first try!! He’s a good boy 🙂

Oh, how I love Bee! It’s such a joy to watch your connection!
Oy vey, I should’ve looked at Jenn’s videos instead of trying to do it before the rains started! Sorry for not following her suggestions. And now the yard is flooded because we’re getting lots of rain, so no chance to re-do for awhile.
But I’ll still share what we did. With a smaller yard and a shorter tunnel, we had some challenges, but did ok. And I realized that Sky likes to have some speed going into a tighter sequence so you’ll see that I added some obstacles before and after.
My MO is to call his name when he’s coming out of the tunnel and to turn towards me. I love how Jenn demonstrated a better way to signal it. With me so far ahead and not showing him a decel, it explains why he was heading to the teeter on the first try.
And even though it’s not part of any of the courses, I am purposely ensuring that Sky turns to me as he completes the last obstacle. Sarah knows why I’m working on that behavior based on what happened at a trial last year.

As always, thank you for your feedback & support! We may not be able to practice for s few days until the rain stops and the yard drains. It was even squishy when we did this on Friday.

This was the second short course I’ve run in about 6 weeks. Non-displaced fractured femur healed and I’m released to train. Shoulder is a different story after the NAC depending on pain and range of motion I’ll have either rotator cuff or shoulder replacement surgery. My choice will be the day I die for surgery!!! With that said I have limited mobility of my left arm. I need to remember to use stronger eye contact and head turn to compensate. The boys did awesome considering all the variables. This was almost our complete training session and I left in bloopers for your feedback.

  • Melody says:

I did not get jump 5 in the frame (my apologies). Good news is there were not any issues with this jump in any of the sequences.

Since we rarely do rear crosses, exercise 3 was a good challenge for us. It was really hard for me not to break the plane of the tunnel entry and get Tucker to execute a rear. Exercise 1 and 2 felt more comfortable, and surprisingly I think he was a little tighter on exercise 2.

The forward looking start in the challenge was something we have not done. Clearly we need to do more of this. Tucker was getting a little better after a few tries. Challenge option 1 or a variation of it is likely how we would run this. I was in Tucker’s way a bit after 6; I think I needed to move laterally just a bit on the path to the tunnel?

Option 2 was a challenge as we don’t have a consistent jump threadle for 8 at speed out of the tunnel. This is something I think we can master with a little more foundation work. For now, we opted for the traditional backside.

    Thanks for your feedback.

Good work, Melody! I’m not a big fan of the right hand to cue the tunnel at #2. Not sure if that is normal for you or what you thought would be best in this situation for Tucker. Otherwise, minor suggestions and I would agree with your thoughts on what strategy is best.

      • Melody says:

Thanks for the great feedback. Right hand cue to 2 was my attempt to get a slight shoulder rotation to cue a turn after the tunnel. I ended up over doing it and it became more of a threadle motion (my bad). I think I should have just trusted my dog and ran it with our normal straightforward decel and left arm into tunnel, because he immediately looks for me coming out of the tunnel. I may set up the sequence again later and try our normal approach.

Used a 12’ tunnel for this session so I had to hustle to get to jump 3 on Exercises 1 and 2. Liked how Mimi read the decel before the tunnel.
Had a nice shoulder rotation for the rear cross on Exercise 3.
Challenge option 1 was better for Mimi with the blind cross 4-5 while option 2 with rear cross and threadle tunnel made her take more strides.
Thank you for any feedback. https://youtu.be/NKG-9YXwDgA?feature=shared

Nice job! Especially the decel into the tunnel at #2.

      • Liz C. says:

Thank you for the feedback!! I love the detailed critiques I eat it all up and try to apply it and not make the same mistakes. When I started BDA I was a rear cross queen with two bad knees & feet lol. I have grown so much from these courses and want to continue to grow even with some physical issues. I am attending a trial this weekend (2/21 – 2/23) it will be our first trial of the year since last October and it will be our only trial before the NAC. My plan is on the first day of the trial is to be supportive and focus on connection Second day to push a little outside our comfort box and then the third day school and correct any issues. Entered in std, JWW, fast, std premier & JWW premier. It is on dirt in a large venue with two arena running simultaneously. What is your advice to focus on at this trial before the NAC? Thanks 😊

        • Jennifer Crank says:

This close to nationals, I run at trials the same I would at NAC. I pick and run the same strategy I would in Tulsa – I don’t take risks that I wouldn’t do there. I work to recover and save any potential errors that would lead to a fault. The one thing I don’t do at this point is allow broken criteria on SLSs or contacts. At NAC I will do quick releases and will recover if they break a stay but this close I’m going to train those things so I making training deposits leading up to the event.

          • Liz C. says:

Thank you for your advice. We had an amazing trial. Three QQ’s and on the last day we were five for five. What are we allowed or not allowed to do in our warm up class at the NAC and what do you recommend?

          • Jennifer Crank says:

To be honest, I’m not 100% sure and I don’t want to answer that incorrectly so I’d suggests reading the rules. I believe it is your time to so what you want assuming your follow their training rules; can’t release the toy from your hand, not toys with noise, no food. In the past, I’ve used the time to reinforce things that need it; SLS, contacts, weaves, etc. There will be a numbered course you can follow but I rarely do. If I recall, its only 45 seconds out there so not much time. Reward some things but don’t do anything that will shatter your confidence. Get on the equipment and surface; that’s the main thing.
