Releasing dogs out of a position to get a reward makes so much sense! That theory explains, for me at least, a lot of what I’ve seen too many times when watching a lot of people work on start line stays in classes and training sessions for years. I’ve had great start line stays, but recently my pup has stood up from a sit while I lead out. She doesn’t move forward, just stands up. This has coincided with a significant increase in her confidence, which we’ve been working on. I think she’s been saying, “Let’s go! I wanna go!” So this raises my question here. If I want to apply releasing from a sit-stay at the start line and rewarding, where should the reward occur? Should it be immediately after taking the first obstacle after release? Or could the reward occur two obstacles or more after takeoff from the starting sit position?

Before you name the behavior of getting on the bed/mat – how does the puppy distinguish between “hey I randomly feel like getting on my bed this moment” in which case I assume they wouldn’t need you to release them, from these training sessions where getting on the bed/mat is followed by a formal release? Sometimes I think I over think these things, so sorry if that’s the case here 🙂

what are you using as your ‘place’ mat?

Unrelated training question but where did you get those great round blue and purple mats?
