When I bring out a toy and try to entice my dog she totally ignores me and the more I try to engage her the more she looks at me like I have lost my mind.
This is in the house in a room with no distractions or outside.
Should I use food as a reward for going to the toy ? Any other suggestions ?
She only weighs 16 pounds so I would like to eventually use a toy as a reward since she can’t have much food in a day without gaining weight . Even though I use all her food for training that doesn’t amount to much time in the training field.

Sherrie, before you turn tugging into a trick, try scattering several toys on the floor in the same room with no distractions and let the dog wander around and see which toy she starts to interact with, and then try to play with her while she interacts with that toy. You can pet her and talk to her and touch the toy without grabbing it and see how she responds. Let me know how that goes.
