        Hi Jenn,
As always, appreciate your feedback! I have a question about the end where I was trying to get more collection and an added stride. The distance from the tunnel to the jump was 20 feet. His extension distance is 22 feet. I didn’t think about that until after I’d run through the all exercises. Knowing this, do you think the 22′ distance would have made it easier for him to add the stride?

        • Jennifer Crank says:

I’m not sure his extension spacing effects his striding here since you are asking for collection/relative collection. He was giving you 3 strides out off the tunnel to the wrap on most reps and the very last BU recall he gave you 4. When you talk extension you’re looking at going from 1 stride to 2. A dog should always be able to collect assuming you’ve given them at least 22″. In extension we have to make sure we’ve given them enough room. Here that wasn’t an issue.

Here are my advanced drills. I was very happy with how they went. I only got one slice threadle when I wanted a curl. My problem is apparently I expect my dog to be bilingual. I kept using “in”. Instead of “here“. https://youtu.be/WefWaE_7G-s

    • Jennifer Crank says:

I have found that with verbals I have to put a very conscious effort into thinking about my verbals when I walk the drill/ course which I never had to do before. I have to make sure I get the correct verbals out and having different dogs with different verbals makes it even harder.

      • Bonny says:

Again , getting so much out of your reviews. I can see how important that early lateral was to the curls so I was not showing any motion the wrong way at the time if commitment.

  • VDogs says:

We loved working on these drills but I wanted your opinion on our threadle cue- am I late with Monty? I feel he could possibly turn better… https://youtu.be/6hNptY5dM4g

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Your threadle cues wasn’t late. Arguably, it was too early so I gave you another drill to try 😉 But yes, your turns could have been a bit better. That wasn’t a result of the verbal cue though.

      • VDogs says:

I can’t believe I was so early!! 🤦‍♀️ Didn’t even realize but you’re 100% correct!! We’ll do those drills for sure- I’m interested to see what he does!!! I actually did not think of collection and bending as separate entities!! I always thought collection was the problem but now seeing this- we have some work to do!! Thank you!!

      • VDogs says:

So he definitely doesn’t know the ‘in’ cue to come in between the jumps and wrap… I thought it would transfer but nope!! We got our work cut out for us!!!

        https://youtu.be/68iwjGcG1PU

Is this any better? I’m trying to work on my motion more!!

        • Jennifer Crank says:

Yes, better. I’d still like you to get where you can have more motion. Imagine you wanted to front cross after the second jump of the threadle to return back to the right end of the tunnel. If you have to stand still too long at jump 1, you won’t make it. Ultimate goal is to “in” with no change in speed. Just a verbal and outside arm/shoulder rotation.

Did these today with Astro . I had a hard time getting off his line in Drill 1 with the FC – I think it was because I felt I had to support him to # 3 . Had no trouble with the 180 drill and the FC because I was able to send early to #2 and go lateral much sooner to get FC. Only had 30 minutes to train 2 dogs – maybe get a video another time !

    • Jennifer Crank says:

That is understandable as they are different mechanics for the handler. A forward send is using deceleration to cue a turn. As a handler, once we decelerate it can be hard to get going again. Add to that we need to turn 180 degrees and run in a new direction. With a lateral send, you aren’t changing or losing momentum. You are simply changing the direction you run. So yes, several handlers had trouble with the FC on the pinwheel drill. It just means you need a better send 😉

Was he actually having trouble with the send to #3, or you just felt you needed to support him more? I would think you could almost send to #3 without breaking the plane of #2 making it a bit easier for you to get to the FC.

  • Bonny says:

Drills 1-3. They are slightly out of order , The 2 front crosses are done at the end of drill 2.I thought these went fairly well, as I expected. All drills were done straight through Until we got to the wrap. Then I got a characteristic rear. He got the wrap on the next attempt, but then I decided to try to get multiple wraps. I had to move the other wing out of the way (really far out of the way! )otherwise he would give me the rear. I kept a good part of my attempt to get him to wrap in the clip, so you could perhaps help. It’s a little frustrating that he can’t do this a little better given that he’s five and this is what I’ve been trying to work on. But I eventually gave up and just completed the drill, which at that point he did fine with. I’ll likely do the advance drills on another day. https://youtu.be/AYFNUVj834U

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Don’t get too frustrated. There was so much great stuff here!! But I do think this might have become the demo video for why you shouldn’t have a single wrap cue AND ask for multiple wraps. Linda M strongly advises against this and I explained why here. Many dogs are fine with it, but I think Tempo is too smart. This is also why P!nk and Swift don’t have multi wraps unless I help a lot.

      • Bonny says:

Gah! Now I fell like crap for confusing him! At least I did not go any further with it. Personally, I don’t really see the need for multiple wraps , Particularly with his past shoulder issue. But I have not done any of the Jessica training to Understand it more fully. So I definitely won’t try that again. I know Abby will use her wrap command on Collection lead it laid out pushes. What are your thoughts using it there for me and Tempo?

        • Jennifer Crank says:

Don’t feel bad! That is what you are here for…to learn. And every dog teaches us (the owners AND the trainers) something different. I know several people doing what you did and not having a problem. It never dawned on me until I saw this video that it wasn’t working.

I absolutely agree that you don’t need multiple wraps but a collection verbal on a lead out is fine. Just use “dig”. You can always use it on the first turn towards you.

          • Bonny says:

Kind of a side note, but despite having problems when I do drills at one jump (trying to isolate my verbals), I do think he is beginning to gain more understanding of “wrap” and it seems to be helping when used in conjunction with motion on course.

  • katy.mallory@yahoo.com says:

We did drills 1-3 as they fit great with my homework from our last lesson (particularly drill 3 as wraps and loops are still a definite weakness). I didn’t do advance since we do ALOT of that with Justine and I’m trying to balance out doing too many Threadles and backsides

  • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

Maybe I should have led with this. 😂 This morning’s review of the advanced drills. https://youtu.be/no32VALkomA

    • Jennifer Crank says:

This looks better than session 1. But I believe you did this before my “get moving” feedback 😉 I liked the video you send with larger distances. And I’d keep working on “loop” and “wrap”. I’ve seen her do better. I think maybe it has to do with the momentum/speed from the tunnel exits.

      • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

Yes this was before the other feedback. We’ve continued working the set up each evening with me actually “moving”. 😉

  • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

Wow this was harder than I anticipated. Some parts went better than I expected, but other areas were a mess.

Yay Vento! Bee and I got started on this tonight, but even at dusk it was too hot to do it all.
