Hi Jenn, I’m not sure what the circle work is, would you please explain it? Thanks.
Circle work is something that I have added to my puppy training after doing some training with Justine Davenport when Hi5 was a young dog. I had no background with circle work and skipped several of the steps and boy did I regret that!
“The goal is to teach them to be motivated to run beside us, understanding what side to stay on and preventing behaviors we don’t want to see in agility like cutting behind, biting at our ankles, spinning or lagging behind us.”
It starts as a chase game when the puppy is young. Hold the puppy back and then take off running. All you want is for them to show up on the same side and not cut behind you. The toy is always in the OPPOSITE hand of the side the dog is on and you want to bring it down to reward before they catch you and drag it across your feet to encourage them to forge head and not cut behind or lag. Always a game of chase!
Over time you will add and arc and the end gaol is running a circle. Keep the puppy on the outside for a long time but ultimately we will add inside circle once you have completed your perch work.
If you fast forward to 6:05, you can see Hi5 doing some as a puppy. I will see if I can find more recent video. I believe I have video from when I did my private with Justine that I might be able to find. https://youtu.be/pvmQJZyAVgs
Thank you. I’ve been doing something similar. I’ll adjust per your description.
Jenn, love this outline. Are you going to discuss these further? some I know and am doing with Zippity, but am not sure about others. Reverse retrieve? foot target/bang game? leg holds? side legs? thanks!
Every Friday new material will be added. I will not get to all of these (at least not in May) but I will be posting new modules that will cover many of these things. I plan to select from a different age group each week.
thanks! will look forward to the Friday posts.
Can you explain what the go see game is?
“Go see” is just a verbal to give you dog permission to go visit people. Many people don’t worry about this verbal but I find it useful for dogs who want to run off and visit their friends, a great way to set up for restrained recalls, and super helpful if you end up with a hyper social dog. It is good for socializing but also for teaching them when and where not to go visit. Ever had someone have to leave their ring crew position when their friends dog ran? Yeah…none of that.
In the beginning you simply work to add a verbal cue. Hold pup, have someone else entice the puppy to visit, and then let go and cue. Eventually you build up towards the person being around, possibly even enticing the puppy, and you don’t cue the behavior and reward the heck out of the dog when they choose you.
