you use push on just a wing as well? is there not confusion with wrap/loop and push when the back side is not obvious?

    • Jennifer Crank says:

With Surprise, when I use loop/wrap I want her to look for a bar as they will be used for frontsides. Since barrel work there is no bar so I use “push” as with that verbal she should look for the upright with no bar. So yes, even if just a wing, if there is no bar I would use “push”. Surprise is the first dog being trained this way. Hi5 was trained on loop/wrap at barrels and wings and I have a pretty big problem with her seeking out a backside when it isn’t. So thought I’d try this and see it it helps.

      • Lauren says:

took me a couple times to understand what you mean, but i think i have it. and you are using push for both directions then?
and when you get to doing loop/wrap, would you place a bar on the ground to give them context?

        • Jennifer Crank says:

“Push” will be used for both clockwise and counterclockwise on a barrel but it will ALWAYS mean turn towards me. We will start a cue for turning away from me around a barrel soon 😉

Yes, for loop and wrap there is always a bar. I just added a “Intro to Collection” lesson where I introduce the loop/wrap so that might be a helpful visual too.

Here again, I think CharLee prefers the toy!

I hope these are all ok. I’m not sure if there is a set progression for circling?

I welcome your feedback. Thank you.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

I’m so glad you’re filming your work and submitting it for feedback. CharLee is at such an important age and there are a few things that I would like to change.

When we look at circle work there are two main objectives. First, I work on circle work as it will ultimately pertains to jump training. This is where you will be kneeling down using food with no verbal. I would like to see a little bit more work with this. You were having to do a lot more help around the barrel and his interest in this was low. I know he is not particularly food motivated but try to train at meal times when he will be more hungry. I would avoid doing any kind of circle work around a wingless upright. I see too many dogs have trouble down the road when you begin weave pole training. So I would stick strictly to barrels or wings. I would like to see. Ore of this before we move on as he needs to have a bette rider of the barrel/wing before we add the handling. Check out the video above of Valerie and Maizie. This is similar to what I’d like to see next from CharLee.

Also, be thinking about your verbals. On the barrel work you mostly used “push” but you did say “go, go go” on one of the reps would which would not be ideal if you are using that for driving forward. Also, whether you know it or not, your “yay”command is what is becoming your toy marker. So if you were going to try to be consistent with your toy markers you need to make sure that you don’t celebrate like that when not using a toy OR change your toy marker.

Here is CharLee circling a cone. (I didn’t say a word but I muted the video because my older dog was barking in the background)
I needed to put the reward at 9:00 for circling clockwise. I could put it at 6:00 for the other direction. He definitely prefers one direction over the other

        • Jennifer Crank says:

Perfect! Works towards getting to 6 o’clock on both directions but this looks great! You can also throw in an occasional double wrap where you don’t mark/reward and he should offer to do another loop. You don’t need to do a ton of this but good even now and again.

  • Claire says:

Another marker question! Do you use ‘take’ (Out if your hand) and ‘find’ (off the floor) for any particular exercise or do you just mix them up for use at anytime?

For example, if you are outside in grass would you use ‘take’ since it’s easier than the dog having to search around in the tall grass for it? But if you’re inside you may use either one?
    Thanks.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Yes, if I am outside in grass I will generally use “take” it my treat and train. But if inside, I will use what makes sense for the activity that I am working. 2x2s, for example, I would use “find” but tunnel exits I would use “take”.

  • Sbaumbarger@bex.net says:

    Stupid questions…
I assume you use push for both directions?
Do you ever try to proof your wrap and loop verbals to the point that you use the verbald for a RC?

    • Sbaumbarger@bex.net says:

Ok, I’m dumb. I got my answer on the push part:)

    • Jennifer Crank says:

For push, yes, I will use it for both directions. It is basically by backside verbal.

For “loop” and “wrap”, yes, the goal is to have those strong enough that I can use them for a tight turn towards me or a RC. If you are a BDA VIPer, go to the April SSPC and you will see me use a verbal on a RC.
