So…. I did an entire training session before this but didn’t hit record. This was all we had left. What jump height should I do this at with him right now. Should I not reward knocked bars?

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Myles certainly looked tired in this video 🙁 I might have moved your jump father from the tunnel so you had more running to get up to the jump and cue the turn. I think you’d get more out of him if you were running at the exit of the tunnel and cued the collection with hand cue more like your would if you were running a course. It looked a bit artificial.

Jump height should be less than full height for starters. Maybe 8-10″? If you feel he is learning/focusing on the collection then its okay to reward a knocked bar. If you feel he understands mentally, then I wouldn’t reward the bar. You want to challenge the dog mentally OR physically, but not both in a single session.

Verbals could be a bit earlier. Don’t wait for him to exit the tunnel and look at you before you cue “wrap” or “loop”. Head checking is costing you time.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

I almost forgot…RUN out of the turn with the toy. Create chase. You just jog a few steps and then stop. He is not going to learn to dig and and drive if you just stand there with the toy. Make him work for it 😉

More Mookie and Bee Collection. I think they both showed some improvement. https://youtu.be/RM6hzYxpBNs

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Definitely improvement! Curious if you did this after the barrel wrapping or before because Mookie seems better than that video too. I am seeing a nice progression on him! Mookie needs some work on multiple wraps but I’m sure you know that. You can keep working that at a barrel as well as a jump. I think it might help him to add an additional prop/wing as I demoed at the end of the video to force his turn a bit tighter. I think you can slowly begin to add some motion with this as long as he continues to progress.

Bee – She was great! 😉 Good review of foundation skills but she can certainly move on.

      • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

This all happened in the same session as barrel. Bee did barrel, then jumping. Mookie did jumping, then barrel. Possibly he just needed a break by the time he was done the barrel.

We have been working on “tiny” motion, but I’m focusing on him being able to tolerate the toy down first….and that is definitely improving.

So since we are using “around”
For barrel instead of loop and wrap, do I just say push when he comes around? It feels awkward to send him back around.

        • Jennifer Crank says:

Perfect plan for Mookie. Get him more comfortable with the toy distraction before adding the motion. You can see me doing that with the TNT and toy in the first circling video.

In thinking about it, I don’t do many multiple wraps at a barrel. Mostly just at a wing/jump. So if the bar is set and you are sending him back around the wing, use loop/wrap. If you are at a barrel using “around “, I’m not sure I’d worry about multiple wraps. Does that make sense? I didn’t even realize exactly what I do until you asked the question so thanks for bringing it up.

  • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

Mookie wanted a turn. He’s not currently doing agility in the yard because of our awesome neighbor dog who tries to help. 🤪. But this was an exercise I could do in a small indoor space.

  • Kathy Smith says:

How do you feel about her shaping her approach in the video with the tunnel added? She is getting nice tight turns around the wing, but it’s partly because of where she’s crossing over the jump bump in relation to the wing. Given what she’s doing now, what would you be watching for when you add a bar with some height? Would you be expecting the same performance or something different as to where she is crossing the bar?

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Ahhh, you noticed, huh?! Good eye and gold star! I’ve been obsessing over this for days now. My decision: wait and see how it evolves. lol. Super official answer, right?! 😉

I immediately saw her shaping from the very first session we did on this. I didn’t even have to wait until I saw video; I could see her doing it live. I have added in a few more multiple wraps than what you see in this video but I am trusting her for now. If this is what she decides she has to do to give me the best possible turn, then kudos to her for figure it out at 10 months. I’d much rather her shape and land tight than to take the same strides but travel wide after landing and get close to an off course. And wouldn’t we all shape given the choice? If I’m turning right into a parking spot, I always swing a bit to the left if I can. It makes it easier AND allows me to go faster. This is the same concept. So touch back in with me in 6 months and we’ll see how I feel about it then 😉

      • Kathy Smith says:

Most definitely. I ALWAYS shape my approach when parking the Honday Odyssey–so much so that I will pass up parking spots that don’t allow shaping. 😉

  • Melanie Thomas says:

    Wow – nice tight turns!

  • Sbaumbarger@bex.net says:

I have been starting this (barely) with Myles but stopped because once I move to a full wing with a bar he seems to get confused. sometimes he will take the backside instead of front side of the jump when I cue wrap or loop. always in the proper direction though, thoughts?

    • Jennifer Crank says:

I would stop doing backsides for now and start him close enough that he can’t get to the backside. Begin with opposition reflex and give the verbal one or twice before release. If you feel him pull towards the backside, don’t release. And keep with parallel approaches. Very hard to do a backside with that approach. You won’t see Surprise have trouble because at this point she hasn’t been introduced to a backside.

You can alway make your bar really long (6-7′) so that is it too much effort to get to the backside. Also, send video 🙂
