tried this today with Zippity. Plan was to do multiple wraps but he seemed confused with counter-clockwise send so worked on that instead. First video shows his confusion about a minute into the video. Second video is work on counter-clockwise direction. He does multiple wraps in both directions around cones in the house and around trees at the park, but not today!

look forward to your input and suggestions for where to go with this next.

This was a great first session and certainly a great lesson to be doing with Zippity. I think I would take a step back and work more on the understand to circle the object (lesson 1 from this module) before adding the handling. He might be fine with the handling at a cone but the trash can confused him and you had to do a bit more luring than I’d like.

In the first video you did your blind crosses with the rotation in the wrong direction. You rotated away from him instead of towards him. I’m not sure you need to worry at all about the blind cross just yet. I would stick to front crosses as you can control the line better. Also, do as many 270 turns as you can. Less 180s!

Good work! More Zippity videos 😉

thank you for the help. I will go back and look at the first module again, and for sure will send more Zippity videos! looking forward to the June course work, too.

hmmm. there is a line of trees along a path that is near my house. What do you think of using tree trunks instead of barrels for this drill? would allow me to do multiple wraps, 270s, etc.

Rowan single barrel work. I am using my backside command and my “toy on the ground” marker even if you can’t hear them!

    • Jennifer Crank says:

WOW! This is beautiful! Great commitment and drive. Go ahead and begin moving farther back at the start so you have more motion into the turn. And I think you can run farther/faster to create move chase (not that I think drive will be a problem) out of the turn. Definitely good to move on!

  • Kathy Smith says:

Where did you get that toy? Serious question.

    • Sarah Fernandezlopez says:

lol. I was going to ask the same!

      • Jennifer Crank says:

If you go to the ‘Training Tools’ lesson in module 6, I posted info in the comments there. It is the BEST TOY EVER despite all the comments you will receive 😉

        • Jennifer Crank says:

Apparently I did not. I know I answered the question because I specifically remember Whitney asking. But maybe that was in the VIP classroom. So hold on and I will get info.

This toy is from Floramicato. They are a European company but you can find them on Facebook. I know that Florida Dog Sports sells them here in the US (and has a website) but I believe they are currently out of stock of the long handled ones. Also, you can just take a fleece leash and tie it around a toy with a handle to make it longer.

I must say, I love how you do your wrap work, and also the reverse retrieves! I do WAY TOO many 180s and it shows! my dog’s usually collect but almost always come out of the turn wide. I also love that you do the barrels in a straight line and not the typical figure 8. Excited to see my dogs improve with this!! Thanks!

    • Jennifer Crank says:

I think too many 180s can lead to flanking wide out of turns as you described. That is why I push for 270 and 360s. And when I do introduce 180s, there is often a physical aid to help keep the turn tight…3:22 of Intro to Collection video.
