Here is our video showing Drill 3,4,5 and 6
I welcome your comments on my form!
It got the job done but it could probably be better.

So this was a great lesson for us tonight, combined with info from our private today. Although I edited out the numerous failures using the “in” verbal, it was glaringly obvious he does knows the “ here” verbal as the jump threadle command as he Immediately got it when I switch to “here” rather than “in”. So I have decided not to change it…he knows it better that I thought he did! and I have other dragons to slay with him LOL! Also, you were correct about body position relative to the jump with the threadle command. That made a huge difference. What a great new piece of info for me. The last tunnel threadle is kinda awkward but I only did one rep and I didn’t realize how lost my body was and how late I was until I watched it back. https://youtu.be/cRUbfqs6-cQ

I’ve included some of the mistakes in this clip. A quick explanation of our verbals…we don’t have many, but I am slowly adding more to his toolbox. As of December I started training Amigo’s, “around”, cue. That is the come across my path to the back side of the jump and curl towards me. You’ll see I pushed on his path a little too much and caused a slice with that verbal. I rewarded him as it was my mistake, not his. I am SUPER happy with how quickly he picked up this new verbal and we’ve been practicing it more and more. You will notice in the last exercise that I do not have a tunnel bypass cue. ( I do, however, have one with my puppy, Deseo! Live and learn!) I taught Amigo that when I say, “Meegs, Meegs,” he is to look to me, then listen for his next cue. I can definitely see where it takes up time as he has to listen and look to me, THEN go into the far side of the tunnel. Thanks for the excellent exercises to work on–they are so helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1NnUSr9JyM

    Drill 3 . Fine with slice… complete failure with curl/rear…. suggestions? https://youtu.be/oIOzpHb2nDw

    • Jennifer Crank says:

It is going to be very difficult (but not impossible) to get the curl from the takeoff side of the jump. While he is in the tunnel move onto the takeoff side and try from there. I bet he’ll get it. Eventually, have enough commitment that you might start the “in” on the takeoff side but you can move against his path (like a reverse retrieve) so you are on the landing side before takeoff. Pause the demo video at :15 and you will see I’ve crossed the plane.

P!nks understanding of threadle curl vs threadle slice is based on location. If I am on takeoff side, she slices every time. In I am on landing side, she curls. This wasn’t intentional but at least I figured it out before it cost be a important run. Tempo might be thinking the same thing.

I thought Copper Sun read this well.

  • phosenfeld@wowway.com says:

    here is drill five:
    https://youtu.be/2Puri6lgobk
Copper Sun seemed unsure of what to do on the landing side of jump two, so thought maybe I was waiting too long – when I moved downstream earlier that seemed to help.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

You didn’t quite do these correctly. The goal was to work the threadle skill at jump #2. So Copper Sun should have landed off jump 1 and approached jump 2 on your left. You approached jump #2 with him on your right and did a front cross on the flat. That’s why you had so much trouble with the second drill. Even I wasn’t sure what was happening 😉 The first option of drill 5 wasn’t wrong, it just wasn’t what I was looking for.

have more videos to upload but will have to do them later.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Shockingly, a bit of trouble with this. Watch that you don’t bring up that outside arm too early (:21). The left arm isn’t really doing much with regard to the backside. It is more to direct the dog to the next jump. Focus on the inside arm on the backside and try to stay moving forward a bit more to test the commitment. I’d like to see you farther ahead at #3. The last rep (:53) was good but I think you can trust him even more. Imagine that you had to do a blind cross after the curl. Would of you had time?

  • phosenfeld@wowway.com says:

Drill 6 – after about three minutes of trying this (did not send that video), we finally got this:
    https://youtu.be/bjojEO3mre8
in our earlier attempts, I think I had too much motion toward the tunnel at first, then I realized I needed to get past the tunnel entry with my ‘here’ command or he would go right into the near entry. something to work on.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Yes, work towards getting your verbal out sooner. The delay in the verbal does help get them past the first tunnel entry but also withholds info. You can see him looking at you a bit more than I’d like rather than turning away and driving for the tunnel. As you said, homework! Isn’t that what this is all about?!

  • Kathy Smith says:

These were fun to work through with Ace. He hasn’t done any jumping or agility for several months, so he is at 20″ here.

    • Kathy Smith says:

Oops! Sorry….I meant to just post the link, not to embed the video. I tried a second time, and ended up embedding it twice.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

      Yay! Glad to see Ace!

This went nicely for you. There was some weird handling on drill #4 that I wasn’t sure if was accident or not so keep an eye out for that. I also liked where/why you added the barrel for the threadle. Smart move!

      • Kathy Smith says:

I had difficulty getting him to commit to a left turn around the wing on the reps where you mention my line was funky. I saw it too, and wasn’t happy with it. I thought blinding would get me into position faster for the backside, but it did not, because I lingered to check to see if he was really going to turn left. I’ll try it without the blind on jump 1 and see if that makes him more likely to take the tunnel (even when I’m not cueing it verbally). This is one where I wish you’d been there to help me in real time.

  • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

Waaahhhhh…..she struggled more with the mirror than the original exercise. 😢 Life just doesn’t ever let me coast or get over confident. https://youtu.be/bYhlpQdFB6E

It is surprising to me that the threadle wrap where I come through with her she does the jump so well, but on the other similar jumping efforts she struggles.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Do you have weave pole wires? You could always tape one on the two outside vertical posts of your wings for a jump aid. I’m sure Joel could rig up something like this: https://clipandgoagility.com/backside-jumping-aid-set-of-4/

      • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

I’ve already ordered the clip and go guides. I only have two of those jumps…..but I’ll just use
Them in the spots that are hard for her.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

My favorite part of this whole video was you walking off the field pouting with your water jug in your hand. lol You had such a look of defeat in your face. Haha!

All and all, this looked good. You are recognizing what needs improved and breaking down failures appropriately. With the threadle curl, are you saying that you see the difference in her jumping effort change when you are on the takeoff side vs the landing side? Generally speaking, when you do that type of threadle curl from the takeoff side (2:14) the dogs commit later so they are willing to take the extra stride. It is almost like a RC on the flat. In many cases, they are so unsure that they keep coming with the handler instead of the jump. So that makes sense a bit. When you do the threadle curl from the landing side (:14), you are doing more of a send so they aren’t as likely to shape or adjust their stride. Keep the bar low/angled to encourage the jumping effort and use props if they help.

      • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

I was like…..when did she see that? Hehehe…..that was a section I missed in editing. 🤪

Ahhh….that makes sense about why she does those better. I didn’t really think about the similarity to a rear cross on flat….. I’ll keep working.

  • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

Super happy with how Bee did on this set of sequences considering how new she is to the moves. Here’s a video: https://youtu.be/uvavWVtt0y8

Now off to set the mirror image and work through other side (well after I visit some jumping basics 😉)
