Drill 2 mirror image…. i think i did better with my shoulders? Although the last option still isn’t great. I was a sliver ahead sending him into the tunnel. https://youtu.be/xJkWXBGs9EM

    • Jennifer Crank says:

YES! Much better. You still started to rotate towards him a bit too much on the 2nd rep (1st rep of second drill) but very quickly corrected it. He seemed much better that direction. Is turning left his preferred direction? Or do you think he was better because you were better?

Verbals were nice & timely and his tunnel commitment is amazing!

  • Bonny says:

Drill 2, one side , he was getting tired so we will save side 2 for another time. https://youtu.be/DF9UlBmhR0M

  • Bonny says:

Drill 1 , had problems with the pull when i moved the jump closer to the tunnel and if I tried to drive out. https://youtu.be/cB8aJ3IQ9Pw

did this last evening in the back yard with spacing of the exercise set up modified to fit. As I viewed the videos I was reminded how good it is to do video – I could see so much. Look forward to your comments.

Glad you were able to work these in your yard! I know often you have to find a place to rent but this worked great for you!

thank you ever so much. Your feedback is so excellent and really helps. The hiccup at the first jump surprised me and I am glad I included it in the video. It didn’t happen all the time but when it did it puzzled me. I thought maybe I was facing the jump too much and that made Copper Sun think he should take it, but I didn’t notice my outside arm! so there was a situation where my outside arm was up way too early, and later in the video it’s not up to cue him when it should be. Lots for us to work on. Will review the circling module again.

  • Whitney says:

Here are 2 short training sessions that we did on this sequence — the entire session each time. Fair warning, it was kind of a hot mess. Pardon Cuyler making noise and the lawn mowers the first session.
I started using “come” to keep him off the tunnel, which is not ideal. I also need to really work on my “opposite motion” since he kept pulling off of our “wraps” to the left.

    • Whitney says:

We worked the mirror image of this today. A bit better (thank heavens). I still can’t keep him off the tunnel without a “come”. I know the point of the exercise is to do it without a bypass command, but we weren’t very successful at that. Only 1 session that was a bit longer since it wasn’t super hot and humid today.

      • Jennifer Crank says:

So the Coaches Eye was for the first video but most of my comments still apply. I actually think the rep at :40 he didn’t need the “come” as he added the stride before the jump. He never did that yesterday. Maybe “seek” is better than “wrap”? I still think moving the jump plane to the middle of the tunnel would be a great idea. I was getting ready to ask ‘any reason for no “seek” at 1:07’ and then your comment about being a mute made me laugh! Perfect at 1:48 and 2:17! Also, opposition reflex is great! Keep at it! This session is much better than the last.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

At least you recognized some of your mistakes. 😉 Yes, the opposite motion was a problem but you can fix that. Training session length looks good. Keep it short.

Here is Bee working the mirror image. https://youtu.be/jiwxkcEKUzY

    • Jennifer Crank says:

The big thing I notice in this session is that you are getting more comfortable managing ALL the things that need to happen for these sessions; prop cues, handing, tunnel exits, makers…it was a lot at fist and even you mentioned that, but it is looking so much easier and appear to be coming to you more natural now.

Bee’s commitment does need work but she gets better as the session progresses. How does she do on single object wrapping or multiple object wrapping? You can just use a wing for this if you want but I’d love to see video. Check out Kathy and Rowan. They have excellent commitment and is it a good example of what video I’d love to see from both Swifties 😉

:45 and 1:10 were my favorite reps. Good wraps AND tunnel skills. I still think this variation of the drill is harder for her than the threadles/backside version.

      • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

Ok. I’ll try and get video of them wrapping an object. I’m back to work tomorrow, so won’t have as much time over the next few days….and it’s supposed to rain for a week. 😫

But….barrel wrapping is on the list!

  • Whitney says:

VERY HELPFUL to see you work through this with Swift when he didn’t get the “loop” every time at jump #2. Thanks!

    • Jennifer Crank says:

I thought watching my interactions and how I handled the mistakes might be useful. Thanks for the feedback and I’m glad you found it helpful. I will try to do that more often. I’m just so conditioned to edit out the bad stuff 😉

  • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

Here’s Bee struggling a bit with this sequence….although improved in two sessions. This is beyond her “in” skill so I had to break it down several times.

By the way this was before your tunnel exit advice. We are currently working on improving the tunnel threadle and my exit strategy.

      • jlavalley@comcast.net says:

Thanks….also “after” watching this feedback I realized I was using Loop for any turn to left….and I think it’s just supposed to be a tight turn back…so you’ll notice that on my next rep. No wonder she’s not “getting” Loop and Wrap as well. I’ll work on the multiples. Thanks again!

        • Jennifer Crank says:

Yes, this is one of my comments about your second video. I wouldn’t use “loop” on jump #1 of the second drill. Not really. tight turn there. Much better on your tunnel exits too!

If you want to make your wrap skills more difficult (I think she can handle it), run back on the line you came form on jump #2 of drill 1. You really helped her by running so afar away from the tunnel after the wrap. The dogs are more likely to go into the tunnel when you run parallel to the tunnel after the wrap. It is better understating of “loop” if you stay straight.

Thank You Claire for submitting your videos. I am a visual person and learn so much more by watching. Nice training area and beautiful sheltie BTW

    Drill #1

I did this once with Andy with 1), 2), and 3).
Then I moved the jump closer to the tunnel and a little further out so that he would have a direct line to the tunnel after taking the jump, to increase the difficulty . That was a little more difficult for us
I tried not to use my ‘A’ cue but I think I may have on the very last attempt.
Am I supposed to do this without my ‘A’ cue that I use to get his attention? Just use my body motion?

    https://youtu.be/6zexLT8lHqM

    —————————-
    Here is Drill #2

I use an ‘in in’ cue for the tunnel threadle
I think I may have accidentally said ‘in in’, ‘tunnel’ on the first attempt with the 3) threadle slice so I did it a second time just saying ‘in in’

      • Claire says:

I reran the three ways of doing a wrap and tried to send and leave sooner as you suggested.
Honestly I had more trouble with wrapping and leaving jump #1 than I did wrapping and leaving jump #2. I think I left too soon and as I moved down the line Andy read this as wrapping to the right instead of wrapping to the left.
Do I just need to play with my timing or is this something I need to work on to make sure my handling indicates the correct wing to wrap? Thanks

        • Jennifer Crank says:

Jump 2 was much better! In slow motion I could see you leaving jump 2 before he ever lifted for the jump on all three reps. This is the commitment we are aiming for and what you want to work towards with CharLee. We are starting that with the reverse retrieve but here soon we will be doing that with barrels.

On jump #1, if you move towards #2 BEFORE he fully commits to turning right on #1, you cued a rear cross. That is by definition exactly what a rear cross is; motion towards their line prior to commitment. So cue seek, get that commitment to the right, then leave. With more understanding on the “seek” verbal, you can leave earlier and earlier. If I really wanted to test the “seek” understanding, you could help by removing the bar and left upright of jump #1. Then he can only turn clockwise. Then add the 2nd upright in after success. And the bar last.
