My puppy is 10 weeks old, is he to young to expect self-control?

    • Jennifer Crank says:

What breed? I’m not sure he is too young to ask for self control but the breed determines how much control I’d want at that age. For example, with a sheltie at 10 weeks I’d be so busy building the toy drive (often it’s not natural) that I wouldn’t put much emphasis on the drop or leave it. My puppy is 21 weeks now and about 18 weeks I started working on his “out” command. His sister was working on it around 12 weeks and it didn’t seem to diminish her toy drive at all.

Hi Jennifer, my puppy is a Jack Russell Terrier. He seems to have a pretty good toy drive, but it is hard for me to judge because I have not had a puppy for 7 years. I am trying to do the best job possible with him.

If you are unsure, I recommend sending some video in for us to take a look at. Given that he is a JRT and you feel like he has good toy drive then I don’t see any reason you shouldn’t be working on “out” as a verbal and impulse control.
