Is this the same skill as the ‘look’/focus forward that people train? It doesn’t seem like this involves a specific cue.
Not exactly the same thing. Here, Justine is not worried about getting the dog to look at the jump before the release. Just that the dog takes the jump on a verbal despite the lateral distance between the handler and the jump. You’ll see on most of these reps the dog is actually looking at her before release.
For forward focus/look, the objective is to train the dog to look at the obstacle before release. The intention is more about where the dog is looking vs then actually doing it. “Look” is not an obstacle command nor a release. Just a cue to tell the dog to look forward.
