I am totally confused and cannot see the difference between her Through and the Zip. It feels to me that the dog is doing the same thing. Help !
The dog is indeed doing the same thing! What you are seeing is a gradual buildup of the behavior and you’re seeing the intermediate steps on the way to the finished “zipzip”.
Here’s my summary:
1) We start with the PHYSICAL presentation of the threadle cue. We ask for a TOUCH to get the dog to come in to us, and then THROUGH to give them permission to take the tunnel.
2) Now we drop the hand touch and just say THROUGH. At this point, the dog it doing the behavior based on the nonverbal elements of the cue. THIS IS THE INTERMEDIATE STEP.
3) Now that we have the dog giving the correct response, we add our new verbal cue that goes with the nonverbal elements of the cue: zipzip.
Does that make more sense?
