I started my young dogs today, with the tip assist. I’ve had the tip assist for years, but have never used it! So happy to find these videos to help figure that out.
I am going for a 4 on the end performance criteria with a verbal release, at least so far! I spend some time trying to teach a bow so I could have them do that at the end, but the girls struggled with that, and I decided to just move on. They just turned 2 in June. Interesting results!
Eddy, who is usually very bold, would readily stop at the end, but would not move straight off to the table, and instead would hop off the side. I could not get him to hop on to the table when I released him.
Daisy usually needs more reassurance, and wants to be “right.” She did very well, but moved off the end without waiting for the release a couple of times. I tried a couple of ways to fix this. First I put her back on the teeter and had her turn around to get in the reward area. Another time, I did not reward her when she came off without waiting for release and had her repeat. She quickly resumed waiting at the end, and hopping off to the table when released.
Iris is more push and demanding. She started running off the end to the table, then flipping around to get her expected treat at the end of the teeter. So, I put her on lead to control her at the end. After one repetition of that, she started waiting at the end.
My plan for the next session is to lower the teeter more for Eddy, so that the teeter is closer to the height of the table (I can’t find the other legs to raise the table). I will also start working on adding more motion, and “proofing” the stay at the end.

Do you use a different verbal cue to stop the dog at the end of the teeter than the one you use for 2o2o ?
At this point of the training I haven’t even added a cue. If I ultimately add a 2o2o, then yes, I would use the same cue.

This is so interesting. Not as we were taught the teeter and now I’m reaping the problem. We had lowered the teeter and made it tip slowly, increasing height and speed of tip over time but never asking the dog to stay on at the end eg the teeter is always in motion and then a 2o2o is asked at the end.
This worked while the dog was slower and more tentative. At my last competition, she ran to the end and launched herself off. I need to go back to basics and teach it your way.
I’m a huge fan of the tool. I think it’s fantastic for dogs that might have some fear around the teeter. But once I started using it, I found that understanding about the end was a side benefit!
Yes, once the dog is fast and reaches the end of the teeter while it is high in the air, it must feel like a roller coaster once it starts to slam down… and scary. They need to be trained to get used to it. Mine did not have any fear until the above happened.
