Hi Leslie, I do side stepping on the flat with my dog as part of our agility warm ups. I do this by having him perpendicular to me and then using my body pressure and also food lure on this nose to side step. I’ve also done this on cavaletti. Can I do this for this exercise or is it important that you’re in front of the dog and they learn to side step that way?

  • Jenn says:

Neo’s attempt at side stepping. I do this frequently on the flat, especially as part of our warm up routine, so I decided to start with stepping onto/over objects.

After the 1st 10 to 14 days post Karma’s spay (as long as she has had no issues), can we work on side stepping on the flat?

Hi Leslie. We tried Side Steps and Push Ups. For the Side Steps, you mention 3 different ways to do it, but I’m not sure I understood the set up for the other two options that aren’t in your video. Please let me know if this is what you meant. https://youtu.be/o_FpPFMYby8

Side steps – we tried doing this on thin planks but he struggles so changed back to the wide ones we used when I first tried to teach him sidestepping. He is getting the hang of it but it is hard for him. His side paw targetting is great. https://youtu.be/xVj_nfUZlOY Sorry this is a bit long maybe just look at sections of the two ways I tried.

  • Michelle says:

Leslie, should we be concerned about proper standing posture on this exercise? So when the dog moves to the target, for me it will be the sensimat at first & then probably the yoga pad, should I be looking at how he’s standing when he gets there or just that the side movement was done?

    • Coach Leslie says:

Yes, they should maintain a normal stand posture throughout the exercise. Many dogs tuck their rear legs under their body as they side step. Use the equipment to help maintain good posture.
