Thank you for this diary! I have a Beagle and using 2×2 method only we were not progressing. She was too focused on the reward line and looking back to make sure a treat was coming. She would start this before he even entered the poles. With the treat and train at the end she is driving, Beagle speed, through the 2 sets. We are on day 4 and she’s at least 80%. Finally having fun again🙃

I’ve come across a weird issue training my young BC with weaves. We’ve been doing 2x2s for awhile. I haven’t been able to train consistently so we’re going very slowly with progressing. During a session on grass my dogs tail wrapped the second set 2x2s and the 2×2 fell on him. I thought that was a fluke so did some more reps and low and behold it happened again. Now he’s afraid of the 2x2s. He can do one set but if I add a second he won’t go near it. I’ve tried counter- conditioning for a few weeks and no success. So now I want to change the picture for him and do channels – anyone have channel weaves they particularly like? I need to order some so I’ve love to hear pros and cons of the different brands.

    • Sarah Fernandezlopez says:

I’m so sorry that happened! IF you go back to 2×2’s at any point, make sure you stake them down.

For channels, we don’t have a particular brand. Because shipping is so expensive, we usually get them from a local person who just makes them for his wife and friends! I would ask around your local area. And you could try our facebook group for more recommendations.

I noticed you are using your weave cue early on- is there a reason that you use the cue this early when the behavior isn’t finished yet? I’ve heard it both ways- call it something else or make a noise until it’s finished, or start with the cue right away- what are your thoughts?

    • Jennifer Crank says:

This is a great question and I’ve done it both ways and heard the theory of both options. In my experience, my dogs who have learned on one verbal (generic “go”) and then switched over to another (formal “weave/poles” verbal) are no better off than those who I just use “weave” right way. In thinking about it compared to other behaviors, when I start teaching/luring spinning left and right I use the verbal right away. I don’t start with one command and switch it. I am basing my verbal choice based on past experience with weaves and other skills/commands but I am not opposed to other methods.

Jen here is a video, can you tell me if i’m doing this right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=660NXvjmeGI&authuser=0

Yes, this looks great! I wouldn’t wait too much longer to straighten up the angle. It looks like they are at 2 and 8. I’d shift to 1 and 7.

Also, try to keep high energy. About half way through you get a rep or two where she is really running through the weaves. We want to keep that up.

Jen, i started following this to a tee last week. I will have to send a video, as i have never done 2×2 before but i feel like it is going really really well! I’m going a little slower than you did, just a session or two a day. Thank you for posting these, they are invaluable!

    • Jennifer Crank says:

YAY! Love hearing this! Remember you can always post videos here in this thread for help and feedback if you’d like. Glad things are going well!

  • alincoln1963@gmail.com says:

So Jen how did he know to go through the poles in the beginning and could I use a clicker?

    • Jennifer Crank says:

He didn’t really “know” to go through the poles but two things helped guide him in that direction; 1) he has a strong background in offering behaviors. From the time he was a puppy he learned the problem solving leads to reinforcement. 2) he understood jumping before we started weaves so when he saw two uprights I’m certain he offered going through them due to the jump training and similarity to a jump.

You could use a clicker. It just depends on how you use the clicker and what will keep things consistent in your training. For me, the clicker is a room service marker so no, I would not use it for weaves.

I just started working with 2x2s with Zippity last week. these videos are so helpful, Jenn, not only to see the progression of your training but also how you dealt with errors – thank you.

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Glad you are finding them helpful. You can also most your progressions here if you’d like and, as always, let me know if you have questions.

  • Sbaumbarger@bex.net says:

I closed the weave a little more because he didn’t seem to be putting much effort into them before. Are they too closed now?

    • Jennifer Crank says:

Wow! These are beautiful! I would simultaneously keep working these “channels” in sequences while also working to close them up completely when just doing weave drills (short sessions, working on entries, etc).

And please make sure you continue to include sound. With the dark blue poles and his coat color, there are times I can’t tell if he did them all so I just rely on your markers! 🤣

  • Denice says:

I should have read the intro before watching the videos- then I would have known that the sessions were a max of 2 minutes………

  • Denice says:

Day 1 questions: how long is each session? how much time between sessions?
do you have a carrier for your treat and train?

  • Leanne says:

Thank you for sharing – so good to see woopsies from both you and Vento as well and how you deal with them. Super.
