So Leslie, Karma and I have been M.I.A since May and now it’s August. I sent you a comment earlier today explaining what has been going on in my life that has consumed me for too many months. But now we are ready to settle a bit and get into the workout segment of our renewed VIP membership. Did I miss this explanation of how to approach each week? I am assuming that each week, I do ALL 3 components of that week’s workout, and EACH TIME I do the workout that week (say M-W-F for example), I do ALL 3 components each time???? Am I making sense????
I’m sure Leslie will chime in, but I believe it is meant to be 3 separate workouts. So your Monday workout might be Flexibility, your Wednesday might be strength and your Friday HIIT. The workouts themselves are laid out in a 3 column 4 row grid. 1 row per week, 1 column per workout.
It is similar to the human fitness 12 week program that has 3 different workouts per week, two are injury prevention and one is strength and conditioning.
Thanks Sarah, Karma said she was feeling tired just thinking about doing all 3 at once, lol!
Sarah is correct. You should do each workout once during the week. You get to pick the days. Flexibility and Injury Prevention are lower intensity so they could be done back to back days. I recommend always taking at least one day off between HIIT and Strength & Conditioning. I’m happy you’re diving back in!
Thanks so much! One other question comes to mind. If there is a particular exercise in the workout that we are not good at, can we substitute according to the list of exercises as long as we stick with the same category of exercises to target the same body part(s)????? Or should we specifically ask you to recommend a particular exercise to substitute?????
Yes, you can definitely substitute in the same category.
This is super cool. I just realized this workout schedule had started. We are obviously new to canine fitness, so we only know three exercises so far! Any tips on how we might incorporate the workouts if we are new? Should I just stick with slowly learning the exercises for a while? Or maybe take the workout schedule for the month of May, and spend June learning those workouts, and start the May workout schedule in July maybe? Just trying to figure out a good approach and there is probably more than one answer! 🙂
If you are new to fitness I recommend spending time learning the exercises. It’s important that your dog know how to do the exercises in good form before doing them in a workout. You could look at the exercises in the workouts for each month and prioritize learning them or you could work on the exercises from last year and then start the workouts. Each month will slightly build on the previous month, so there won’t be a huge set of new exercises to learn each month.
Thanks so much! We’ll work on learning the exercises with good form. 🙂
Can you describe the side step exercise that you mentioned in the injury prevention section?
Side steps are moving sideways with front and rear stepping together. I’ve linked two videos, one is how I teach it with side targets and the other has side steps in the workout.
